Garner & Smith Gallery label verso. Painting shows some pencil outline, varied areas of texture, and paint thickness. Gérard Souzay was a French baritone and one of the 20th century’s finest interpreters of art songs. In his later years, Mr. Souzay taught, both at the University of Texas at Austin and in master classes, and seriously took up painting. He was a keen abstract painter, and in 1983 he published a book Sur mon chemin: pensées et dessins in which a selection of his paintings was accompanied by his written commentary, on art and life.
