Vintage Mid-Century Modern Art Pottery Vase Table Lamp designed by Fong Chow for Glidden Pottery – Gulf Stream Blue -1950’s. … more Vintage Mid-Century Modern Art Pottery Vase Table Lamp designed by Fong Chow for Glidden Pottery – Gulf Stream Blue -1950’s.The Gulf Stream blue line which was designed by Chow Fong is considered to be the most famous of the Glidden pottery pieces and is highly sought after. The color, texture, and pattern in the words of Chow Fong were developed to ‘work on the form’ so that the glaze and decoration enhances the sculptural impact of the piece. This Gulf Stream Blue vase table lamp is hand decorated and particularly hard to find. The vase is monumental and is pinched on four sides to give the bulbous form visual interest. The surfaces which are symmetrically composed are richly decorated by a simple pattern of lines that seemingly flow around the indentations to give a sense of movement and tranquility. The simplicity of the black metal base further enhances the overall appearance of the vase by simply receding into the background and not visually competing with the form of the vase. The vase has been professionally rewired to ensure that it functions properly. Lamp harp is included but lampshade is not included in the sale and is provided to give an overall sense of scale.Glidden Pottery is a unique stoneware bodied artware that was produced in Alfred, New York from 1940 to 1957. There are several key designers of Glidden Pottery. Notable designers include the founder, Glidden Parker, who himself was a student at the New York State College of Ceramics in Alfred. He attended summer school from 1937-39 where he was a student under the designer Don Schreckengost. While many attribute the success of Glidden Pottery to the genius of Glidden Parker alone, the true genius lay in his ability to select colleagues to work with who served as designers, mold makers, and decorators. Fong Chow was Chief Designer of Glidden Pottery from 1952-1957.Fong Chow was born and primarily reared in China, where he was educated at the Wah Yan College of Hong Kong. Later, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from 1947-1951, as a student of Norman Arsenault and then Alfred, where he received his B.F.A and M.F.A., as a student of Charles Harder, Ted Randall, Daniel Rhodes, Katharine Nelson, and Marion Fosdick. He completed design work for the Glidden stoneware production kiln from 1952-1957. Fong worked in several mediums with painting, etching, mixed-media and ceramics being most notable. He worked initially as an assistant curator of ceramics for the Far Eastern Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and later as curator from 1958-1983. A portion of his exhibition record includes: Berkshire Museum, Pittsford, Massachusetts, 1950; Invitational Craft Show, State Fair of Texas, Dallas, Texas, 1953; New York State Craft Fair, Ithaca College, 1954; New York State Craftsmen, Cortland Savings Bank, Cortland, New York, 1955; New York State Craftsmen, David A. Howe Library, Wellsville, New York, 1957; Syracuse Ceramic Guild, Lecture and Live Demonstration, Syracuse, New York, 1959; Ceramics 1963, Silvermine Guild of Artists, New Canaan, Connecticut, 1963. Exhibited at the Nationals from 1949-1958.
